A brick street and everything after it

West Orange grew around a rail bed that became a trail. Winter Garden's four restored blocks are the centre of gravity, Windermere and the Butler Chain hold the lake money, and Horizon West is the newest, fastest, most under-construction part of the metro. Saturday on Plant Street is the busiest half-mile in the county, and the traffic on 429 tells you everyone found out.

Plant Street

Four blocks the citrus money built, restored instead of replaced.

The parking spaces downtown are sized for golf carts. That tells you how people actually get around here.

Why golf carts everywhere?

Residents personalize their carts and cruise downtown, pulling into cart-sized parking spots — it's the local way to arrive at Plant Street Market or Crooked Can Brewing.

Oakland Nature Preserve

A boardwalk that walks you out into the cypress at the lake's edge.

The trail runs on an old rail bed. You can ride it to breakfast in town and be back before it gets hot.

How far can I ride?

22 paved miles through parks, neighborhoods and downtowns — and it links toward Clermont's South Lake Trail as part of 50-plus connected miles of the Coast-to-Coast Connector.

AdventHealth Winter Garden

For a lot of people moving here, this building is the reason.

It is the hospital you can reach without touching the interstate — which is most of the appeal of this side of the county.

The Butler Chain

The town sign says "Among the Lakes." It is not decoration.

The lakes connect. A boat moves between them without ever going on a trailer.

Why 'Among the Lakes'?

That's the welcome sign's own motto. Windermere sits inside the Butler Chain of Lakes, and boating, fishing and kayaking are simply how the town moves.

It is still being built. Expect construction traffic, expect the field behind you to become houses, and expect park traffic on the 429 that does not keep office hours.

  • Oakland Nature PreserveIt is the only real bike infrastructure out here. Off the trail, you share the road.
