So what is it actually like?

Where the metro gets cheaper

Kissimmee, St. Cloud and the 192 corridor. Forty minutes further out buys most of a hundred thousand dollars, and Celebration proves someone will pay a premium for a front porch. The lakefront in St. Cloud is the best value view in Central Florida. The trade is the drive, and 192 is not a pleasant one.

Celebration

Disney built a town in the nineties, then sold it and walked away.

White picket fences, a downtown that reads as a film set, and fake snow every December.

Who designed this town?

The Walt Disney Company, in the 1990s — a model town of storybook streets. Residents joke that they rarely need to leave 'The Bubble'.

Stop 2 of 4Kissimmee

Old Town

A neon strip with a Ferris wheel and a car show every Saturday night.

Classic cars cruise the street weekly. It has outlasted most of what opened around it.

What happens Saturday night?

The Saturday Nite Cruise — billed as the longest-running weekly car show and cruise in America, rolling through a re-created classic Florida main street.

ChampionsGate & Reunion

Golf resorts where the counties meet, half of it rented by the week.

Big new houses at prices the closer suburbs stopped offering, on the far side of everything.

What's the centerpiece?

The Omni Orlando Resort — championship golf, multiple pools and a lazy river — with new shops and dining rising quickly around it.

Downtown Kissimmee

A brick main street on a lake, older than every park on this map.

A 1900s cattle town that became a tourist county around it. The lakefront park is still the best part.

What's the Monument of States?

A 1943 step-pyramid of 1,500 stones donated from every state and around the world, held up by three and a half tons of steel rail — roadside America at its most sincere.

What would annoy you about living here?

The county runs on 192, and 192 is a hard road to love. The north side and the south side are a long way apart — plan your life around one half of the map.

Can I talk to anyone here?

That was the drive. Osceola has a room, and it stays open after the tour ends — what’s on, what changed, what somebody is annoyed about this week.
