Orlando International, on our East Orange County map Spirit Airlines ended 33 years at MCO, ceasing all operations May 2
Spirit Airlines shut down entirely on May 2, 2026, closing out 33 years at Orlando International — where it carried roughly 496,000 passengers in March 2026 alone and had 237 flights to 46 destinations scheduled for the following week. Nine carriers, including Southwest, Delta and JetBlue, agreed to help stranded Spirit passengers in coordination with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airline employed 160 people based at Orlando and still owed the airport money at shutdown, with the exact amount being calculated.

Orlando International, on our East Orange County map A $351 million interior overhaul is coming to MCO's original Terminals A and B
The airport's board approved a $351 million interior renovation of Terminals A and B in February — new flooring, ceilings, lighting and restrooms across Airside 1 (gates 1–29), Airside 3 (gates 30–59) and the main terminal's Levels 2 and 3. The same meeting added $4.5 million to extend Terminal C's moving walkways along the corridor that connects to the train station. The original terminal complex dates to the early 1980s; this is its largest refresh in the Terminal C era.

Orlando International, on our East Orange County map MCO is planning 8,000 more parking spaces, with two garage expansions targeted for 2030
Parking at the airport is getting a structural answer: in January the aviation authority approved the pathway for two garage expansion projects — one at Terminal A and a new garage with rental-car space at Terminal C — together targeting 8,000 new spaces with openings in 2030. A $13.9 million parking guidance system is rolling out first, live in Garage C in early 2026 and reaching the remaining garages through summer 2027. It all sits inside a $5.9 billion capital program running through 2030. This is program authorization, not yet a construction contract.

Orlando International, on our East Orange County map Tokyo–Orlando nonstops flew for the first time — and came back for more in August
ZIPAIR's February 23 charter from Tokyo Narita was the first nonstop passenger flight ever between Florida and the Asia Pacific, landing 280 passengers at Terminal C after what the airport calls 30 years of chasing the route. The airline returned with three more Tokyo nonstops on August 8, 13 and 18. These are open charters, not scheduled service — the airport's stated goal is to build the case for a regular route.

Orlando International, on our East Orange County map MCO's Terminal C just got bigger — five new gates are open and Virgin Atlantic moved in
Orlando International's $462 million Terminal C expansion officially opened July 1, adding five flexible new gates (250-254) that can handle everything from narrow-bodies to international wide-bodies. Virgin Atlantic relocated from Terminal A to the new wing, and Terminal C can now serve 10-12 million passengers a year — welcome breathing room for an airport that moved nearly 58 million people in 2025. Next up under the Elevating MCO plan: 8,000 more parking spaces and renovated restrooms in Terminals A and B by 2030.
