Sunshine Corridor: Brightline has not filed for bankruptcy — the $350M backstop applies only if it does

As of Aug. 31 Brightline has not entered Chapter 11. Bloomberg reports a filing could come within the next few weeks, and that the Assured Guaranty agreement — at least $350 million in new loans if Brightline files — is not yet in effect. Assured insures about $1.1 billion of Brightline's senior municipal securities; total obligations are about $5.5 billion. Trains keep running, and Brightline could still strike a different deal with other creditors in or out of court.

Sunshine Corridor: still a $6M study on paper as Brightline lines up bankruptcy financing

The rail link from Orlando International Airport to the convention center and I-Drive remains in its $6 million environmental study, approved in April 2025 and running into 2027 — no track has been laid and no construction funding is committed. Meanwhile Brightline, the private railroad meant to share those tracks and extend them to Tampa, signed a deal August 26 for at least $350 million in bankruptcy financing from Assured Guaranty, with a Chapter 11 filing possible within weeks. Trains keep running through a reorganization, but the Tampa extension now has no funding, no start date, and a would-be builder in restructuring.

From our comments

“They need to start off by making SunRail 24/7 that way people are used to the access 💯 then they can expand while they're getting people off the roads. Obviously they're going to do the tourism s*** first but what about community stuff so everybody can move around easier?”

“When does it ever take 3.5 hours to drive from Orlando to Miami? I’ve had to make that drive a few times, and I will gladly pay 5x that price to take the train then deal with the morons who after 17 exits still can’t figure out how to get to the rest stop on the turnpike”
