Disney's construction decade: foundations pouring at Magic Kingdom, Villains Land still dirt

Three years into Disney's $60 billion parks decade, the work is visible but uneven. At Magic Kingdom, crews are pouring concrete foundations and erecting a tower crane for Piston Peak, the Cars land replacing the Rivers of America that closed in July 2025 — while Villains Land next door remains cleared ground used for staging, with major work not expected to ramp until 2027. Animal Kingdom's Tropical Americas is furthest along: its tower crane just came down and the Encanto building's steel is up ahead of a 2027 opening. At D23 in mid-August, Disney named the new rides but still gave no opening dates for the Magic Kingdom lands.

Disney's construction decade: Monstropolis gets the first date — it starts opening in 2027

Disney said at D23 on Aug. 17 that Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios will open in phases starting in 2027: the Glob Theater, two dining locations including Harryhausen's, and the Scareporium shop come first, with the roller coaster continuing construction and expected in 2028. It is the first dated opening among the new lands — Magic Kingdom's Villains Land and Piston Peak still have no announced dates.

Disney's Lakeshore Lodge opens July 1, 2027 on the old River Country site

Disney confirmed Aug. 27 that Lakeshore Lodge — 967 accommodations rising on the former River Country site on Bay Lake — opens July 1, 2027. A resort rather than a park land, but a hard date inside the construction program.

From our comments

“Isn’t this rumor like really old?”

“I still think this is going on a weird place. How does it fit behind Big Thunder thematically? It doesn’t. It should have been behind Fantasyland.”
